I was just looking, this thread was started in 2007!! People were just beginning to hear of CSS then. Now most people know that tables are out except to display data and CSS is the way to go for layout and design.

I have to make this disclaimer: tables are not for the purpose of making a page layout. They are for the purpose of presenting data. That being said, tables versus divisions arguments generally revolve around this fact.The only way to make a speed comparison table vs div would be to do a page with a table with one row and three cells, each cell containing one word. Then do a page with 3 div's floated in a row each with the same word used in the table cells. I seriously doubt you will see any difference in speed or rendering times.
