I never use all of them. Did you mean community script as forum board or what?

I'm not sure what you're talking about. I've never even heard of them.

Well, what do you expect from a newbie?

I have never heard of Social Networking software. Could you explain a little about what it does, and why it is used?

Big Grin  RE: PHPFox vs Handshakes vs BuddyZone?

Hello,

I have used all of these pieces of software, including alstrasoft's e-friends. For those that don't know, a social networking script is basically a piece of software that is the basis for a social networking website. Every social networking has a script of some sort. However, some scripts are better than others.

I used to be a huge proponent of phpFox. However, as I do more exploration, I find that the admin area is very primative and does not offer strong admin features, like a second generation banner system. And to be honest, a banner system is one of the most important aspects of the website. Version 1.5 is coming out soon, and promises to offer great improments over the previsous versions.

I know that my programmer loves phpFox because he has created over 100 modifications to the software, which means there is a solution for almost every kind of niche. The price of the software is $300. It can be purchased at http://www.phpfox.com.

I have recently been working with the latest version of buddyzone. I think that the owner of this script has taken a lot of steps to keep script in line with the "I need myspace" site developers. It includes such things as a myspace page importer and a "youtube" type script. I speak with the owner and originator of the buddyzone script quite often, and he is a very nice man. He is very candid and asks me what I would do to improve the script. My programmer states that buddyzone is a much cleaner script, which makes modifying it a lot easier. I think that overall, if you are looking for a "myspace" type website, then this is your best bet. However, you will need a custom designer so that the website doesn't look like an exact replica of myspace. Great potential. You can purchase the script here, it's $399.99, http://www.vastal.com/buddy-zone-soc...ng-script.html

Alstrasoft's e-friends. Please don't buy this script. It is littered with errors and is a poor poor platform to build a large site upon. I have repeatedly encountered customers that have issues with this software. Not that all scripts don't have their issues, but this one is terrible.
AlstraSoft efriends http://www.alstrasoft.com/efriends.htm Price: $280 You've been warned.

Handshakes isn't a bad script either. It has a lot of the same features as phpFox, and comes in the same pretty package. I have had less experience in dealing with this piece of software. However, I have heard mixed results. I know that my programmer has yet to recommend the script, so I must yield to his judge. So to be honest, I don't know enough to give a good opinion on it. Dzoic's Handshakes http://www.dzoic.com It's $349 to purchase.

Before you make any decision, figure out what your niche is. Don't try to overtake myspace.com. You will loose and waste a lot of time and money doing it. However, if you are building a social networking website for a small business group or a non-profit organization, you must first address the features that you want to give the members. Don't try to cram every feature imaginable into the site from day one.

It's important to remember that adding features will be necessary to keep members coming back. So start with the basics, and work with a web design team that knows how to add features or modifications to the software.

RE: PHPFox vs Handshakes vs BuddyZone?

iF YOU ARE LOOKING AT GETTING A SOCIAL SCRIPT DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GO WITH phpfox.. i went with Buddy Zone only because of the myspace codes part.. But I have went through nothing but #$#@ with this.. The owner ANKUR JAIN.. wont reply to anyones emails. he even closed his support forum down becuase people were complaining about his support.. He emailed my hosting company and told them to shut me down because I was running a pirated copy of his software ( i paid him 400.00) only because he got mad at me.. anyway if you would like to see the whole dramatic story of everyone that is having a problem with this script and then make your mind up then,,, goto this site.. there is even an audio clip of a phone conversation of me and ANkur there... once you hear this youll think twice about dealing with him.. I wish I had jsut went with PHPFOX..

heres the site

RE: PHPFox vs Handshakes vs BuddyZone?

I am looking for a 3rd party software to build upon. I have been reading these threads for 2 days now and have only gotten more confused as to which one I should go with. I am not a programmer but I am very aware of what features I want. It seems like the top 3 competitors have what I am looking for however, it seems to me that it comes down to how stable the script is and the ability to upgrade. Am I right?

The $300 price tag is not a real issue but I do want to get the most for my money. I would rather spend 300 on a script and another 2-300 on mods to start up than to get a "dolphin" script (sorry) and spend $50 per mod + installation. I checked out the Handshakes and from a user interface point of view....ehhhhh I'm stuck between PHPFox and BuddyZone. from what I read, there are a lot of people who have problems with BZ support.....if thats the only downfall where do i sign up!! PHPFOx on the other hand has not as many capabiities (out of box) ie..myspace layout code abilities, myspace profile import....however it's a clean look...to me (a novice).

Ok, BZ offers the abiliy to rent the software on THEIR server but with minimal upgrades for $39.99 or purchase full for $399. I spoke to he owner, who was very nice but from what I heard thats only because he hasnt got my money yet, however, when I called to ask about the software rental....I recieved a different tone...very unpleasent (maybe because I was intending on spending $40 instead of $400)

PHPFox offers the abiliy to rent the software on ANY server but with limited upgrades for $39.99 or purchase full for $300. I havent spoke to support directly but I recieved a timly response to my e-mails.

I am looking for a myspace clone in which I will make some different changes in the future to stand out. I am leaning toward PHPFox but if you think its a bad idea please let me know and why. And please, a real reason....something other than "because the script sucks"

Thanks

Is anyone familiar with Joovili? I'v heard little about it butI'm curious as to what those familiar with script have to say about it.

RE: PHPFox vs Handshakes vs BuddyZone?

Well what features are you looking for exactly. Especially if you want a forum you may want try IPB or vB(3.7 although it's not out yet) as they both are heading towards social network setups from the looks of it.

But out of these 3 phpfox looks like the best to me but I haven't used any.

Also if you look hard enough you can find some almost exact MySpace clones (I'm not sure if their all legal though Stuart)

RE: PHPFox vs Handshakes vs BuddyZone?

I am looking for a script which is as close to myspace a possible which will allow me to modify. I want the "Basics" profiles, music, top friends, bulletins, forum, classifieds, however I wanted to intergrate either Userplane or Boonex Ray for video chat and im. I want it to also be fully compatable with myspace layout codes. So, I'm looking for a script that will get me there the fastest, cheapest and MOST of all the easiest....without script hassle
